Portugal is a paradise for golf lovers, with its wonderful climate, spectacular landscapes and rich history. From the sunny Algarve to the verdant landscapes of the northern region and the beautiful views of the Portuguese islands (Madeira and the Azores), there is a golf course for everyone.
Each course has its own special characteristics and together they make Portugal one of the best places in the world to play golf. Some clubs are windy links by the Atlantic Ocean, others are quiet, wooded flatlands in the countryside… you can even find 9-hole courses on the doorstep of vibrant cities.
In this article, we’ll take you on a tour of all the golf courses in Portugal and show you what makes each one special.
There are 77 clubs and 103 golf courses in Portugal (according to the Portuguese Golf Federation). This is a very significant number considering the area of the country.
Here you can see an overlay of Portugal with the United States of America to better understand the importance of the number of golf courses in Portuguese territory.
According to DN (Diário de Notícias), 10,421,117 people were living in Portugal in 2022, which corresponds to around 18% of the UK’s population (source: Office for National Statistics).
However, golf courses are mostly concentrated in the Algarve region and within a 2 hour drive of Lisbon.
